The Rue Saint-Jacques was Lutetia’s cardo maximus. The highest spot on the left bank is located at numbers 172-174 of this street, near the Luxembourg station. This was probably the spot chosen by the Roman surveyors as the zero point for establishing the grid of the Early Roman town. The Rue Saint-Jacques, which runs down to the Seine, lies over the ancient Roman road, which was probably lined with houses.
